# Documentation Validation Report
## Executive Summary
This report provides a comprehensive validation of the technical documentation created for Trilium Notes against the actual codebase implementation. The validation covers architecture, APIs, security, search functionality, and AI integration features.
## Validation Results by Category
### 1. Architecture Documentation
#### Three-Layer Cache System ✅ ACCURATE
**Validation Status**: Confirmed accurate with minor clarifications needed
**Findings**:
- **Becca (Backend Cache)**: Documentation accurately describes the server-side cache structure
- Correct interface definition in `/apps/server/src/becca/becca-interface.ts`
- Properties match: `notes`, `branches`, `childParentToBranch`, `attributes`, `attributeIndex`, `options`, `etapiTokens`
- `allNoteSetCache` correctly identified as optimization feature
- **Froca (Frontend Cache)**: Implementation matches documentation
- Located at `/apps/client/src/services/froca.ts`
- Correct properties: `notes`, `branches`, `attributes`, `attachments`, `blobPromises`
- Lazy loading and WebSocket synchronization confirmed

- Located at `/apps/server/src/share/shaca/shaca-interface.ts`
- Properties verified: `aliasToNote`, `shareRootNote`, `shareIndexEnabled`
- Read-only optimization for public access confirmed
**Minor Corrections Needed**:
- Documentation should note that Froca includes `blobPromises` for async content loading
- Shaca includes a `loaded` boolean flag not mentioned in documentation
#### Entity System ✅ MOSTLY ACCURATE
**Validation Status**: Core entities correctly documented with some type updates needed
**Findings**:
- **BNote Entity**: Properties and types match implementation
- Located at `/apps/server/src/becca/entities/bnote.ts`
- Note types icon mapping confirmed (NOTE_TYPE_ICONS object)
- Additional property found: `isBeingDeleted` flag for deletion operations
**Corrections Needed**:
- Add `geoMap` to the list of note types (found in NOTE_TYPE_ICONS)
- Document the `isBeingDeleted` flag used during deletion operations
- Note that `content` can be either `string | Buffer` not just string
### 2. API Documentation
#### ETAPI ✅ ACCURATE
**Validation Status**: Endpoints and parameters correctly documented
**Findings**:
- Implementation in `/apps/server/src/etapi/notes.ts` confirms:
- `POST /etapi/create-note` endpoint exists with documented parameters
- `GET /etapi/notes/:noteId` endpoint verified
- `PATCH /etapi/notes/:noteId` endpoint confirmed
- Search endpoint `GET /etapi/notes?search=` validated
- Validation rules match documentation:
```typescript
ALLOWED_PROPERTIES_FOR_CREATE_NOTE: {
parentNoteId, title, type, mime, content,
notePosition, prefix, isExpanded, noteId,
dateCreated, utcDateCreated
}
```
**Additional Finding**:
- Protected notes cannot be modified through ETAPI (security feature correctly enforced)
#### WebSocket Implementation ✅ ACCURATE
**Validation Status**: Real-time synchronization correctly described
**Findings**:
- WebSocket service exists at `/apps/server/src/services/ws.ts`
- Froca client-side integration confirmed for real-time updates
- Event-based synchronization between Becca and Froca verified
### 3. Security Documentation
#### Encryption Implementation ✅ ACCURATE
**Validation Status**: Encryption details precisely documented
**Findings from `/apps/server/src/services/encryption/data_encryption.ts`**:
- **Algorithm**: Confirmed AES-128-CBC with 16-byte IV
- **Integrity**: SHA-1 digest (4 bytes) prepended to plaintext confirmed
- **Key Padding**: `pad()` function ensures 16-byte key/IV alignment
- **Base64 Encoding**: Confirmed for storage/transmission
- **Legacy Support**: Code handles old 13-byte IV for backward compatibility
**Technical Accuracy Confirmed**:
```typescript
// Actual implementation matches documentation
const cipher = crypto.createCipheriv("aes-128-cbc", pad(key), pad(iv));
const digest = shaArray(plainTextBuffer).slice(0, 4);
```
**Additional Security Feature Found**:
- Error recovery for "WRONG_FINAL_BLOCK_LENGTH" errors (legacy data handling)
### 4. Search Documentation
#### Search Implementation ✅ HIGHLY ACCURATE
**Validation Status**: Search architecture and limits accurately documented
**Findings from `/apps/server/src/services/search/expressions/note_content_fulltext.ts`**:
**Confirmed Technical Details**:
- `MAX_SEARCH_CONTENT_SIZE = 2 * 1024 * 1024` (2MB limit) ✅
- Fuzzy search implementation with edit distance calculations ✅
- Token validation for fuzzy search (`validateFuzzySearchTokens`) ✅
- Content preprocessing (`validateAndPreprocessContent`) ✅
- Cached regex patterns for performance ✅
**Search Operators Verified**:
```typescript
ALLOWED_OPERATORS = ["=", "!=", "*=*", "*=", "=*", "%=", "~=", "~*"]
```
**Database Query Optimization Confirmed**:
```sql
SELECT noteId, type, mime, content, isProtected
FROM notes JOIN blobs USING (blobId)
WHERE type IN ('text', 'code', 'mermaid', 'canvas', 'mindMap')
AND isDeleted = 0
AND LENGTH(content) < 2097152 -- 2MB limit
```
**Additional Implementation Detail**:
- Protected note handling with session check before search
- Multiline regex support with "ms" flags
### 5. AI Integration
#### AI/LLM Features ✅ FULLY IMPLEMENTED
**Validation Status**: Comprehensive AI integration confirmed
**Findings**:
